EMS Experience
University Hospital, the state's only Level 1 Trauma Center, is a key component of the Central Mississippi Emergency Medical Services District. UMMC serves as the resource hospital and medical hub of EMS activity. Emergency Medicine residents are exposed to EMS activities daily, learning first-hand how a tightly controlled EMS system operates and how to communicate with ambulance personnel by radio and in the ED. A statewide training program for emergency medical technicians, EMT-intermediates, and EMT-paramedics, is based in the School of Health Related Professions on the Medical Center campus. This program further enhances interaction between EMS personnel and Emergency Medicine residents by allowing residents to participate in ambulance runs with EMS personnel.
UMMC also provides a critical care helicopter transport service that is based out of the Emergency Department. Residents get hands-on experience with helicopter dispatch as well as authentic flight experience. An additional elective rotation has been designed for concentrated aeromedical exposure for interested residents.
